Hári Mária Commemoration
Commemoration
Horváth Dezsőné dr.
Holding a ceremony on 6 October to mark the anniversary of Dr. Hári’s death is growing into a tradition. This year the commemoration was again organised by the Department of Conductive Pedagogy at Villányi út, in the frame of a festive meeting of our College Senate. The circumstance that 10 years had passed since she left us made the event even more special.
Personal memories were cited (former colleagues recalled their time together). Dr. Erzsébet Balogh’s professional memories and projected photos brought a less familiar side of Dr. Hári closer to us.
Of the subsequent brief recollections by former students we would like to stress here Susie Mallett’s. Andrew Sutton’s lyrical reminiscences followed.*
A pupil of our school performed a verse, then a student conductor recited Zoltán Vitó’s poem on Mária Hári. Finally the conductors’ choir gave a fine performance.
In the end representatives of the College departments and the Practice Institute and pupils from our kindergarten and school placed their wreaths at Dr. Hári’s memorial plaque.
For photos of the commemoration please visit the Gallery.

Sympathy with the victims of the catastrophe in Japan
On behalf of the management and staff of the Pető Institute I express our sadness at the natural catastrophe which has hit Japan. We feel deep compassion with the people of Japan and especially those personally affected by the earthquake and its consequences.
The disaster concerns us all the more due to our long standing partnership with Warashibe Institute and the Japanese conductors working there.
Our sympathy goes out to the leaders of Warashibe Institute. We hope that their staff and clients are well.
We have always admired our Japanese friends for their spirit of unity, perseverance and commitment to conductive pedagogy. We trust that their people will be able to recover from this tragedy and wish them strength and courage.

TASK SERIES IN CONDUCTIVE EDUCATION
"The use of various task series in conductive education provides the opportunity to achieve farreaching results in overcoming dysfunctions and establish orthofunction. Practical experience of several decades shows that task series which have been designed with much care help motordisabled persons achieve motor-experience, acquire new knowledge and develop their learning skills, as well as increase their problemsolving aptitude and spontaneity. Task series represent an important means of development." (Éva Beck)

New Playground and Sports Ground in Villányi Út
As a result of the generous donation of Decathlon Hungary Ltd., a new playground and sports ground has been built in our garden. On the 12x10 metres sports ground Pető children can play basketball, football and boccia. The new sports facilities include an obstacle trail and a little bridge on which wheelchair users and walkers can practise moving on various types of surfaces.
New disabled bathrooms in Pető Apartment Hotel
Three more disabled bathrooms were completed in the 23-room Apartment Hotel of Pető Institute in December 2009. As a result of the special „flat” shower and skidproof flooring, we can provide our disabled guests more convenient and secure environment.
Changes in the reservation system
The deposit system had to be introduced in order to protect the interest of the families who come to the Institute and wish to stay in the hotel. There were too many guests (sadly even regular ones) who failed to cancel their reservations and did not turn up while we sent away others whom we could have put up.
Thank you for understanding.

The Principle and Aim of Conductive Education
Physician and educator András Pető developed his conductive educational system after World War II, in 1945. His method opened up a new way for the rehabilitation of motor disordered children and adults whose dysfunction was due to damages to the central nervous system. His approach was first taught and practised in the Institute named after him. According to Professor Pető, in addition to damages of the central nervous system, motor disability is chiefly due to the lack of co-operation among different functions. He argued that instead of applying special therapies, these people need to be treated through real education, and thus he created the system of conductive education to prove the idea. Conductive education is based on the idea that despite the damage, the nervous system still possesses the capacity to form new neural connections.More Articles...
